Pinion seal completion
Sunday, January 12, 2020
Pinion seal continued...
Marked the pinion nut/location (white-out) |
And a close-up of the number of threads (for re-install) |
Removed & draining |
Really hard to see, but there should be a 1/8th" clearance on the seal. This one was nearly pressed all the way in. Maybe a 32nd. |
The old seal is out. |
Our new seal... |
Before installing, we needed to drain a bunch of gear oil from the rear carrier, so we can clean/dry before applying the silicone. |
Fuel pump/fuel line reassembly...
We got the fuel pump back from Corvette Stop (who rebuilt it for us). Let's get it in... |
Cleaned off all the old fittings (lots of teflon tape...a no-no for fuel fittings) |
New fuel filter. |
All done. Alternator back on. We'll wait on the fuel filter bracket until after we fire it up and ensure there's no leaks. Onto the pinion seal completion... |
We were looking around under the car after the fuel pump was completed and Jerry noticed this. Yikes! One of the engine mount bolts was loose. Very loose. : 0 |
All Good. |

Pinion seal debug and disassembly...
We started off w/some parking brake fine tuning adjustments. |
Grabbed a pic of the rear carrier #'s |
We pulled off the rear/passenger wheel to check the possible wheel cylinder leak. |
Good news. Dry as a bone! |
Def. not the wheel cylinder, that slight leak seems to be coming from the trailing arm seal. |
Removed the rear carrier bracket ("snubber") bolt |
And the 2 threaded bolts in the front of the carrier bracket |
Loosen the long rear bolt from the carrier bracket, and... |
And the carrier bracket pivots down and away |
Pinion seal continued to leak - even during the process today... |
Close up of the pinion nut (and # of exposed threads, for when we reinstall the new one). |
Shifter linkage cotter pin was rubbing. We also lubricated all the shifter linkage. I believe we have some correct spring retainers (to replace the cotter pins). |

First Day - Dec. 26th
Jerry and I started the day by giving a quick car wash to get all the dust off. |
The rear-end (front seal) has a bit of a leak |
We noticed this ground strap wasn't attached. Done. |
Rear/passenger brake fluid leak (minor) |
Had to remove the alternator to get to the fuel pump |
Fuel filter is kinda tweaked. We have some extras, so we'll replace that. |
Fuel pump off. |
Old fuel pump on the left, new (reproduction) on the right. Note: the fitting alignments are different. Hmmm... |
Fuel filter fitting a bit bent. |
We noticed the upper radiator hose is collapsed. We'll address this after the fuel pump work. |
